I kept meaning to make a post to rec the amazing gifts I got for Yuletide 2016, but politics has been such a show of disaster that I just didn't manage to do it in any kind of timely fashion. Which is v. bad of me, as the gifts I got were amazing. I spent my Christmas Day sneakily re-reading them on my phone in between playing Tomb Raider (2013) and stuffing my face with mushroom vol au vents and chocolate.

My Yuletide gifts were:

Several views of Helen of Troy by the people around her.

This was a gift of the calibre I never expected to receive when I added the Iliad to my requests - I've loved the Hellenic classics for so, so long, since reading the Iliad and the Odyssey as a small Rae, and this fic was just beautiful. I couldn't quite believe that someone who has never met me could write a fic so perfectly tailored to my tastes and it was such exquisite prose. ;_;<3

Watch me request ancient Greek fandoms every year now.

And then my lovely [personal profile] blindmadness wrote me an absolutely lovely (and long and PERFECT) Demon's Lexicon treat. As I was reading it on Christmas Day I was like, wow this is the prompt I would always be worried to give because I would be so particular about how I would want Sin/Mae and Nick/Mae to work and yet this person has handled it perfectly. Then, of course, it turned out to be Maja - who gets to hear so many of my TDL ramblings.

I am merely embarrassed I didn't KNOW it was Maja until reveals.

Oh, and I wrote some stuff! My assignment was for [personal profile] dolorosa_12, who wrote a wonderful Yuletide letter for The Demon's Lexicon. I had already bookmarked it for treats so I was utterly delighted to get it as my assignment.

Hi friends, I'm participating in the Fandom Trumps Hate auction - just in case anyone fancies bidding on me to be their writing monkey. I'm pretty excited to see what I'll end up writing.

I'm making a list of everything I want to bid on and then distributing my spare funds accordingly. <3

Books: The Raven King

Every year I tell myself to use this journal for more than just Yuletide, but I am a) lazy and b) really busy, so my good intentions always seem to crumble. But! I really wanted to write a post about The Raven King, even though I read it so long ago now and thus this post is terribly belated. This post is really going to be my distilled thoughts about it, as my reading was so long ago.

The Raven Cycle has been very important to me. When The Raven Boys came out, I had decided to stay in the UK after two years of living abroad. I had just got a job in a very new company and there were already little warning flags going up about how toxic that office was going to become. When The Dream Thieves came out, that job had deteriorated to the point that I was excruciatingly anxious, unable to sleep and constantly nauseous, but reading The Dream Thieves was the thing that motivated me to get up in the morning. When Blue Lily, Lily Blue came out I wasn't at that job anymore. I had started a new job, in my dream company, and I was seeing a counsellor for the anxiety left behind by the old job. It took time, so much longer than I had expected, but it felt like slowly returning to myself. The Raven Cycle was the first thing I had felt fannish about in ages. I was reading fic regularly. I was writing - though most of it is still sitting entrenched in my laptop. I made friends though it and met some of my absolute favourite people.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that The Raven King had a lot hanging on it when it came out. It simultaneously benefited and suffered from that - the series has been so important to me that I was prepared immediately to love it and to overlook flaws. But I was also hoping for so, so, so much, with years worth of hope.

So here are my thoughts, which I am bulletpointing for ease of reading:

[Yuletide 2016] Dear Writer...

Hello my lovely Yuletide author! I am so excited that you're going to be writing for me and rest assured I am going to love my gift. This letter is meant in the spirit of suggestions intended to inspire, so if you have an idea that doesn't match my specific interests exactly please feel free to go for it - I want you to enjoy the experience of writing for Yuletide and I will just be so excited to receive an awesome fic for one of these fandoms. <3

In general, I prefer fics written in third person and I don't mind whether it's past or present tense. I love character- and relationship-driven stories over plot-driven ones (not that I don't love a long and involved story, but I find the emotional beats in it a lot more satisfying than the intricacies of the plot) and for Yuletide I strongly prefer happy endings or at least hopeful/optimistic ones. I don't mind if you put the characters through hell first, but I need that to be resolved happily at the end and with enough length to enjoy the resolution.

I am happy with any rating and I love both gen and shipfic. However, please don't break up existing canonical relationships or include non-canon pairings unless specifically requested.

Some particular things I love in fic: banter, slow burn attraction, slice of life, found family, everyday and mundane themes combined with the extraordinary or magical, power dynamics with a positive impact on everyone involved, loyalty kink, elaborate descriptions of scenery, people being super competent at what they do (and other people being super into it *_*), enthusiastic and explicit consent, daemon AUs, soulbond AUs, university AUs with elements of the canon world.

Things I don't love: focus on character death (during or after), angst without happy endings, noncon, character bashing, humour fic, a/b/o, knotting, body piercing, misogynistic dirty talk, misogyny in m/m, characters described as "slutty" or "trash", humiliation kink, infidelity, descriptions of hipbones.

If you're hoping to do a little research beyond this letter on what I enjoy, you can find my previous Yuletide letters in this tag, my tropes meme results here and my kink meme results here. I'm laserae on Tumblr and Antediluvian on  AO3.

I still haven't read The Raven King. I pre-ordered it the moment it was possible to do so, and then two weeks before it arrived I decided to embark on a re-read of the entire Raven Cycle, because this will be the last time I can read it speculatively... and speculating about the end of the Raven Cycle has formed the backbone of my fannish activity for the past year and a half.

This means I've been dodging spoilers like bullets.

But now it's time. I finished my re-read of Blue Lily, Lily Blue this morning. The sun is shining and a blanket and my neighbour's cat are in the garden outside, so there's where I am going to start my reading of The Raven King. I can't imagine better circumstances!

I've put some of my speculations and hopes for The Raven King below the cut - there are spoilers for the rest of the Raven Cycle, if you haven't read it yet.

cut for possible spoilers for the Raven Cycle pre-The Raven King )

This series has been incredibly important to me for the past four and a bit years. I've made some really good friends for it and felt fannishly enthusiastic about something for the first time in ages.

Now I am going to go to my garden and start reading The Raven King.

Yuletide 2015

I really enjoyed Yuletide this year, although I wailed a lot to [personal profile] silly_cleo and [personal profile] blindmadness about how I was never going to manage to finish my fic. I have this woe every year, so one would think that I would be familiar with it by now. I felt incredibly lucky though because my assignment was actually one of the letters I had bookmarked anyway in an flurry of optimism about my time to write treats, so it was a letter I already loved and for which I was excited about writing.

We matched on Jurassic World, which I had offered on a whim ("Oooh I could write about DINOSAURUSES!!!") and because the movies are the movie series of my goddamn heart. I loved their letter in part because they seemed to be interested in all the same things I love thinking about with regard to the films.

So I wrote 8k of aftermath fic and found a new fandom to adore:

As my gift, I received an absolutely precious Sorcerer to the Crown fic about Prunella's life after the book. It is a sad truth that whenever I love a character I want to see assassination attempts against them, so that they can foil them and continue to be the gem of my heart.

Briefly Dangerous (1833 words) by impertinence
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom:

Characters: Prunella Gentleman, Zacharias Wythe
Summary:

Impertinence wrote a wonderful voice for Prunella and there were some brilliant bits of comic dialogue which felt very in keeping with the book:

"Well, ma'am," it said, "technically it's not for your ears at all, ma'am, on account of technically I'm here to kill you."

"They tried this one already," Prunella said. "A week before my wedding, in fact."

Overall a lovely Yuletide. I've still got some letters bookmarked for treats and I've been very much enjoying reading my way through the collection. I'm hoping to make a recs post in the next couple of weeks.

Because I was feeling a bit ambivalent about the top two posts on my DW being my trope meme results and my kink meme ones, I thought I would actually make a post. I am so excited about Yuletide! I don't think I have actually been this excited about it before, but this time I've had time to think really hard about all of my offers and read all of the letters that have been going up and I have a private "treats" post saved already. *_________*

A friend bought me Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell for my birthday. I had avoided it for years, mostly out of a vague and rather unfair irritation with how many people kept telling me to read it when it first came out, but because it was a birthday gift I felt compelled to at least give it a go. Also I read some bloody good Jonathan/Arabella fic and basically all it takes to convert me to a fandom is wave the ladies at me and go "look how cute" and I am done for. And I'm really enjoying it! I was very dubious for the first third of the book because I don't care about Norrell in the slightest, but then Arabella and Lady Pole and Stephen Black and the gentleman with the thistle-down hair appeared and my heart changed entirely!

It is, however, a very heavy book to read when one is commuting.

I thought about offering it as a Yuletide fandom but I don't feel entirely confident in my ability to get the tone and language right, so I may just do some treats if I see a letter that pickles me.

Once I'm finished with that, I'm not entirely sure what I will read next. My phone has a long list of recommendations gleaned from friends over tea and I've actually managed to block off three of my windows with towers of unread books. I have Carry On ready to go on my kindle, but I suspect I should probably start reducing the actual book towers a little bit before Christmas and the next influx of books. It is very difficult. I keep trying to make reading into work for myself.

[Yuletide 2015] Dear Writer...

All fandom notes may contain spoilers. If you intend to read or watch any of them (and you totally should!), please be warned! I'm happy to copy a particular fandom into a separate post so you can read it without fear of accidentally seeing a spoiler for something else.

Hi my lovely Mystery Yuletide Writer!

First of all, I promise you that I am going to love my gift. I only ever request fandoms that I am deeply excited about, which means I am terribly easy to please because I am just so so delighted to be receiving fic for them. I hope that you also enjoy writing it, so while I have provided some details on the things that make me wiggle with joy, please do feel free to improvise if you have an excellent idea that you’re excited about writing and you think I will enjoy, even if I haven’t specifically asked for it. <3 However, I would prefer it if you didn’t include the things I’ve marked as DNWs.

In general, I prefer fics in third person and both past and present tense are fine. I don’t have any preferences for fic length - whatever you feel suits the story you want to tell. I am also very happy with the 5 things/5 times style of fic if you like doing that type of thing! I don’t mind a little bit of angsty heartpain in my fic, but as it is Yuletide I would like it to have a generally happy ending - whether outright happy resolution, bittersweet positivity, or just generally uplifting. Also please don’t feel obliged to include all the characters I’ve requested - it is fine to pick and choose as suits your ideas. But please don’t include non-canon ships outside of those I mention specifically under each fandom.

I love:
  • found families and families in general; friends being 100% there for each other, guarding each other, backing each other up, even if there are also issues and tension (ESPECIALLY if there are issues and tension)
  • stories which combine everyday and mundane themes with elements of the epic or extraordinary, and elements stolen from myths and fairytales
  • paranormal creatures or themes; eerie, spooky, scary scenes or themes - I'm currently listening to the Black Tapes podcast and this really embodies the sort of half-skeptical/half-accepting/scary shit as half true story and half urban legend I'd love woven in
  • pre-relationship, new relationship, established relationship, and flawed relationships which still work
  • first kisses/makeouts that don’t immediately lead to sex (either by accident or by design)
  • slice of life fics with pyjamas and domesticity, or snug scenes of cosy okayness in between high octane danger and misery (like being in bed in the middle of a storm)
  • sleeping themes like napping, sharing a bed, comforting each other after nightmares, weird sleeping habits etc
  • power dynamics between people - i have a big thing for loyalty kink, and for power shifts between people in a way that is positive for both
  • growing trust and intimacy between people and learning to read them through the tiny everyday minutiae of their lives
  • usually powerful characters being ill or injured and being tended by their friend/partner
  • character-driven stories with a veneer of plot
  • scenery porn (if you love describing things, feel free to give me long loving descriptions of the architecture and natural surroundings even if they are also unremarkable)
  • people being very competent (and other people being into it); people thinking at great length about other people - their hands, their collarbones, their infuriating habits, how tall, how small, how incredibly frustrating.

I don’t like: fic focusing on major character death (during or after); angst without happy endings; dubcon; character bashing; humour fics; a/b/o; knotting; body piercing; misogynistic dirty talk; humiliation kink; characters described as “slutty” or “trash”; cheating on each other; descriptions of hipbones.

I love shipfic, gen and porn and I really do love all three equally, so it is whatever floats your boat! It can be as explicit, non-explicit, or as non-existent as you like. <3 If you do go the porn route, I like enthusiastic consent and I don’t like Character A rushing B before B is ready even when they are consensually going to have sex shortly. If you’re stuck and would like further inspiration, my trope meme results are here and (*ahem*) my kink meme results are over here.

I prefer not to receive crossovers, but I do really love fusion fic if that is also your jam! By which I mean, transplanting characters from Fandom 1 (my Yuletide fandom) into the setting/plot of Fandom 2. I should be familiar with and enjoy the second fandom - I’ve got a list of my fandoms here - and I would love to see any of my Yuletide fandoms fused with them. I’m happy with transplanting characters from Fandom 1 into just the setting of Fandom 2, or actively setting them up in roles in the plot of Fandom 2. Feel free to tweak those roles from their original factory setting too - e.g. If Napoleon Solo is in the Harry Potter role at Hogwarts, his arc doesn’t necessarily have to follow Harry’s. However, what I don’t want is Napoleon Solo going to Hogwarts and meeting Harry Potter.

I also have a special place in my heart for certain AUs, though I like them to interlace the core elements of the original canon. Some AUs I particularly like: university, vampires (either a world with vampires, or one or more characters being vampires), spies, supernatural beings; royalty; sports team ESPECIALLY ROWING CREWS @_@<3

If you want to have a nosy around my online presence, I’m afraid it’s a bit sparse, but I’m antediluvian on AO3 and laserae on Tumblr.

On to the fandoms! I'm happy for other nominated characters to be included from tagsets where I've requested a specific set, as well as any core canon characters who weren't nominated.

Rather belatedly, I wrote numb is an old hat, old as my oldest memories in the Raven Cycle fandom. New job continues to be lovely. My brain is starting to find space and time to fit stuff in around it again, which is nice - I started writing fic on the train, hunched over my laptop, screen tilted at an obscene angle so that even I could barely read it. I hate screen-peerers.

I'm trying to motivate myself to watch the new season of Teen Wolf but just... can't quite manage it. I'm super excited for Arden Cho having more screentime but still feeling very meh about Allison's death. I'm leery of it becoming a boys' club the way Supernatural did (well, arguably SPN always was boys' club so...). I feel like the stuff that interests me and the stuff that interests Jeff Bridges might be diverging quite a lot...

In any case, not watching the new season currently serves a purpose as I'm writing fic which takes place at the end of the last one.

From this season I would like a lot more Lydia and Kira screentime. Malia too. I would like all of them to receive, at some point, their own independent plot lines as Stiles did with the nogitsune. With Lydia especially I'm starting to feel as though she's a support character for Stiles and with both Lydia and Kira I feel like the banshee and kitsune things have so much interesting potential and I'm not sure if the show is going to go anywhere with it.

(I basically never trust shows to have sufficient interest in their female characters and plot lines, thanks to SPN, Vampire Diaries, etc etc)

Yuletide reveal

I wrote Promises Made, a Spirited Away fanfic.

One day, I will have it together enough to do pinch-hits and extra gifts for Yuletide. Maybe that's something to aim for this year.

I am sad there's not more Lydia genfic in the Teen Wolf section of AO3. I really don't give a damn about the fandom's pet slash pairing, Derek/Stiles, but I love my baby girl and would like to see her getting some fic love. :( Or, hell, gen for any of the characters really. Sterek just leaves me cold. There's some great fic out there for it, though.
