I kept meaning to make a post to rec the amazing gifts I got for Yuletide 2016, but politics has been such a show of disaster that I just didn't manage to do it in any kind of timely fashion. Which is v. bad of me, as the gifts I got were amazing. I spent my Christmas Day sneakily re-reading them on my phone in between playing Tomb Raider (2013) and stuffing my face with mushroom vol au vents and chocolate.

My Yuletide gifts were:

Several views of Helen of Troy by the people around her.

This was a gift of the calibre I never expected to receive when I added the Iliad to my requests - I've loved the Hellenic classics for so, so long, since reading the Iliad and the Odyssey as a small Rae, and this fic was just beautiful. I couldn't quite believe that someone who has never met me could write a fic so perfectly tailored to my tastes and it was such exquisite prose. ;_;<3

Watch me request ancient Greek fandoms every year now.

And then my lovely [personal profile] blindmadness wrote me an absolutely lovely (and long and PERFECT) Demon's Lexicon treat. As I was reading it on Christmas Day I was like, wow this is the prompt I would always be worried to give because I would be so particular about how I would want Sin/Mae and Nick/Mae to work and yet this person has handled it perfectly. Then, of course, it turned out to be Maja - who gets to hear so many of my TDL ramblings.

I am merely embarrassed I didn't KNOW it was Maja until reveals.

Oh, and I wrote some stuff! My assignment was for [personal profile] dolorosa_12, who wrote a wonderful Yuletide letter for The Demon's Lexicon. I had already bookmarked it for treats so I was utterly delighted to get it as my assignment.

Hello my lovely Yuletide author! I am so excited that you're going to be writing for me and rest assured I am going to love my gift. This letter is meant in the spirit of suggestions intended to inspire, so if you have an idea that doesn't match my specific interests exactly please feel free to go for it - I want you to enjoy the experience of writing for Yuletide and I will just be so excited to receive an awesome fic for one of these fandoms. <3

In general, I prefer fics written in third person and I don't mind whether it's past or present tense. I love character- and relationship-driven stories over plot-driven ones (not that I don't love a long and involved story, but I find the emotional beats in it a lot more satisfying than the intricacies of the plot) and for Yuletide I strongly prefer happy endings or at least hopeful/optimistic ones. I don't mind if you put the characters through hell first, but I need that to be resolved happily at the end and with enough length to enjoy the resolution.

I am happy with any rating and I love both gen and shipfic. However, please don't break up existing canonical relationships or include non-canon pairings unless specifically requested.

Some particular things I love in fic: banter, slow burn attraction, slice of life, found family, everyday and mundane themes combined with the extraordinary or magical, power dynamics with a positive impact on everyone involved, loyalty kink, elaborate descriptions of scenery, people being super competent at what they do (and other people being super into it *_*), enthusiastic and explicit consent, daemon AUs, soulbond AUs, university AUs with elements of the canon world.

Things I don't love: focus on character death (during or after), angst without happy endings, noncon, character bashing, humour fic, a/b/o, knotting, body piercing, misogynistic dirty talk, misogyny in m/m, characters described as "slutty" or "trash", humiliation kink, infidelity, descriptions of hipbones.

If you're hoping to do a little research beyond this letter on what I enjoy, you can find my previous Yuletide letters in this tag, my tropes meme results here and my kink meme results here. I'm laserae on Tumblr and Antediluvian on  AO3.

I really enjoyed Yuletide this year, although I wailed a lot to [personal profile] silly_cleo and [personal profile] blindmadness about how I was never going to manage to finish my fic. I have this woe every year, so one would think that I would be familiar with it by now. I felt incredibly lucky though because my assignment was actually one of the letters I had bookmarked anyway in an flurry of optimism about my time to write treats, so it was a letter I already loved and for which I was excited about writing.

We matched on Jurassic World, which I had offered on a whim ("Oooh I could write about DINOSAURUSES!!!") and because the movies are the movie series of my goddamn heart. I loved their letter in part because they seemed to be interested in all the same things I love thinking about with regard to the films.

So I wrote 8k of aftermath fic and found a new fandom to adore:

As my gift, I received an absolutely precious Sorcerer to the Crown fic about Prunella's life after the book. It is a sad truth that whenever I love a character I want to see assassination attempts against them, so that they can foil them and continue to be the gem of my heart.

Impertinence wrote a wonderful voice for Prunella and there were some brilliant bits of comic dialogue which felt very in keeping with the book:

"Well, ma'am," it said, "technically it's not for your ears at all, ma'am, on account of technically I'm here to kill you."

"They tried this one already," Prunella said. "A week before my wedding, in fact."

Overall a lovely Yuletide. I've still got some letters bookmarked for treats and I've been very much enjoying reading my way through the collection. I'm hoping to make a recs post in the next couple of weeks.

Hi my lovely Mystery Yuletide Writer!

First of all, I promise you that I am going to love my gift. I only ever request fandoms that I am deeply excited about, which means I am terribly easy to please because I am just so so delighted to be receiving fic for them. I hope that you also enjoy writing it, so while I have provided some details on the things that make me wiggle with joy, please do feel free to improvise if you have an excellent idea that you’re excited about writing and you think I will enjoy, even if I haven’t specifically asked for it. <3 However, I would prefer it if you didn’t include the things I’ve marked as DNWs.

In general, I prefer fics in third person and both past and present tense are fine. I don’t have any preferences for fic length - whatever you feel suits the story you want to tell. I am also very happy with the 5 things/5 times style of fic if you like doing that type of thing! I don’t mind a little bit of angsty heartpain in my fic, but as it is Yuletide I would like it to have a generally happy ending - whether outright happy resolution, bittersweet positivity, or just generally uplifting. Also please don’t feel obliged to include all the characters I’ve requested - it is fine to pick and choose as suits your ideas. But please don’t include non-canon ships outside of those I mention specifically under each fandom.

I love:
  • found families and families in general; friends being 100% there for each other, guarding each other, backing each other up, even if there are also issues and tension (ESPECIALLY if there are issues and tension)
  • stories which combine everyday and mundane themes with elements of the epic or extraordinary, and elements stolen from myths and fairytales
  • paranormal creatures or themes; eerie, spooky, scary scenes or themes - I'm currently listening to the Black Tapes podcast and this really embodies the sort of half-skeptical/half-accepting/scary shit as half true story and half urban legend I'd love woven in
  • pre-relationship, new relationship, established relationship, and flawed relationships which still work
  • first kisses/makeouts that don’t immediately lead to sex (either by accident or by design)
  • slice of life fics with pyjamas and domesticity, or snug scenes of cosy okayness in between high octane danger and misery (like being in bed in the middle of a storm)
  • sleeping themes like napping, sharing a bed, comforting each other after nightmares, weird sleeping habits etc
  • power dynamics between people - i have a big thing for loyalty kink, and for power shifts between people in a way that is positive for both
  • growing trust and intimacy between people and learning to read them through the tiny everyday minutiae of their lives
  • usually powerful characters being ill or injured and being tended by their friend/partner
  • character-driven stories with a veneer of plot
  • scenery porn (if you love describing things, feel free to give me long loving descriptions of the architecture and natural surroundings even if they are also unremarkable)
  • people being very competent (and other people being into it); people thinking at great length about other people - their hands, their collarbones, their infuriating habits, how tall, how small, how incredibly frustrating.

I don’t like: fic focusing on major character death (during or after); angst without happy endings; dubcon; character bashing; humour fics; a/b/o; knotting; body piercing; misogynistic dirty talk; humiliation kink; characters described as “slutty” or “trash”; cheating on each other; descriptions of hipbones.

I love shipfic, gen and porn and I really do love all three equally, so it is whatever floats your boat! It can be as explicit, non-explicit, or as non-existent as you like. <3 If you do go the porn route, I like enthusiastic consent and I don’t like Character A rushing B before B is ready even when they are consensually going to have sex shortly. If you’re stuck and would like further inspiration, my trope meme results are here and (*ahem*) my kink meme results are over here.

I prefer not to receive crossovers, but I do really love fusion fic if that is also your jam! By which I mean, transplanting characters from Fandom 1 (my Yuletide fandom) into the setting/plot of Fandom 2. I should be familiar with and enjoy the second fandom - I’ve got a list of my fandoms here - and I would love to see any of my Yuletide fandoms fused with them. I’m happy with transplanting characters from Fandom 1 into just the setting of Fandom 2, or actively setting them up in roles in the plot of Fandom 2. Feel free to tweak those roles from their original factory setting too - e.g. If Napoleon Solo is in the Harry Potter role at Hogwarts, his arc doesn’t necessarily have to follow Harry’s. However, what I don’t want is Napoleon Solo going to Hogwarts and meeting Harry Potter.

I also have a special place in my heart for certain AUs, though I like them to interlace the core elements of the original canon. Some AUs I particularly like: university, vampires (either a world with vampires, or one or more characters being vampires), spies, supernatural beings; royalty; sports team ESPECIALLY ROWING CREWS @_@<3

If you want to have a nosy around my online presence, I’m afraid it’s a bit sparse, but I’m antediluvian on AO3 and laserae on Tumblr.

On to the fandoms! I'm happy for other nominated characters to be included from tagsets where I've requested a specific set, as well as any core canon characters who weren't nominated.

Rather belatedly, I wrote numb is an old hat, old as my oldest memories in the Raven Cycle fandom. It was my first time writing for those books and I re-read them all multiple times in the hopes that I wouldn't fuck it up too badly - I'm actually pretty pleased with the result, and my recipient seemed to like it, which is really all that matters! I really enjoyed writing it, in the end, and am hoping to make myself write more in that fandom.

This person wrote a really nice rec for it on Tumblr, and also recs some other gorgeous Raven Cycle fics!

I received a wonderful October Daye fic, A Boisterous Storm , featuring Quentin, the Luidaeg, and a zoo full of animals.

I am slowly reading my way through various other fandoms in the collection and thought I'd keep myself a post/rec post here of the ones I'm enjoying. I will add to it as I go...

And I am notoriously bad at writing letters, forgive me.

More generally, and taken from last year's letter:
I like stories which combine everyday and mundane things with elements of the epic or extraordinary. I like elements stolen from myths and fairytales. I like families, blood or found. I love everyday fics, with pyjamas and domesticity. I love magic in daily life.

Any rating is fine, from gen to filthy filthy porn, but I don't like non-con or humiliation. I do like examination of the power dynamics between characters. I don't like character-bashing or OOC.
antediluvian: (so ultra-bohemian)
I wrote Promises Made, a Spirited Away fanfic.

One day, I will have it together enough to do pinch-hits and extra gifts for Yuletide. Maybe that's something to aim for this year.

I am sad there's not more Lydia genfic in the Teen Wolf section of AO3. I really don't give a damn about the fandom's pet slash pairing, Derek/Stiles, but I love my baby girl and would like to see her getting some fic love. :( Or, hell, gen for any of the characters really. Sterek just leaves me cold. There's some great fic out there for it, though.
antediluvian: (Default)
I got THREE (3!!!!!) gorgeous fics this Yuletide.

The Thousandth Fathom is a Spirited Away fic and is absolutely LOVELY. The author managed to make so many Ghibli and Miyazaki references that I was completely blown away. My family had to cope with me squeaking helplessly with delight as I read it.

I also got a Guilty Gear fic with UST!Sol/Ky, Like Your Halo's Lined With Mistletoe, which I loved. The author does a really nice job of showing the dynamic between them! Also I always always always want more Sol/Ky fic. *_* I got a gorgeous one a couple of years ago, Under Pressure, which was stunningly beautiful.

And someone finally wrote me a Dune fic!!! Amal features political weddings and intriguing and Ghanima/Leto, which is exactly what I've wanted to read ever since I finished reading the books. *__*

So basically, I'm really really really happy! And totally blown away. <3333

I haven't heard from my Yuletide recipient yet, though. :/ I really hope it's just 'cause they're having a gorgeous Christmas and haven't had time to check AO3 (I struggled to get time to read my gifts!) and not 'cause they hated the fic.

I need to write my Yuletide letter!

I'm super-excited about my assignment, too. It's for something very new to me and the request is literally... the most perfect request I could have for this fandom. I need to start researching and planning.

EDIT: WROTE IT! I really am super-excited to see what my writer does. Just writing up all my requests made me excited all over again.

Hello my lovely Yuletide Author!

I'm sorry that you've had to deal with this ridiculous placeholder since the assignments went out. I always struggle a bit with writing these letters because really, I will be tremendously happy with anything you give me. I love receiving presents. But I know that being vague is not terribly helpful to you, so I will do my best. Please feel free to email the mods with questions for me if you need more specificity.

I finally managed to add an ending to my Yuletide fic. I uploaded it before the deadline but it wasn't totally completed (in my head) and I knew it needed something more. I'm not... totally sure about it? It feels like I got a little rambly at the end. I loved the prompt too much and when I am filled with love I just want to flail and splurge all over the place.

I'm so excited about my gift. I feel so lucky with every gift (and treat) I've had since I started signing up with Yuletide.
antediluvian: (something fickle something fey)
I've snuck my Yuletide fic onto google docs so I can write it sneakily while at work. It's funny, because it's one of the most perfect prompts that I could've received and the moment I read it my heart did this happy little flip in my chest... and then I freaked myself out. I got stagefright, essentially. So I've had a document full of false starts for the past 2-3 weeks and I've been re-familiarising myself with the source in the hope of jogging something loose. That finally happened last night, and now I kinda know what I'm doing, and as usual it's right before the deadline.

I'm still really happy, though. The fandom I offered is one I've offered every year since I started Yuletide and the request I got was just... *_* It's a wonderful request. I read it and felt fuzzy and happy that I would get to write it.
antediluvian: (the sunlight warm on her skin)
Hi Mystery Yuletide Writer!

First of all, thank you thank you thank you! I saw my request go out as a pinch hit and then saw that it had been claimed, which means that you are amazing and wonderful and I automatically love you for rescuing my Christmas. Thank you. You're an angel.

I am going to love whatever you write for me. I promise. I love getting presents.

Some of the things which I particularly love: good dialogue, everyday situations, flawed relationships which still work, power dynamics, strong women who are treated as strong, sibling relationships, girls who are friends with girls. I like any combination of these things. I like stories which examine people down to their details, I like relationships where the balance shifts sometimes. I'm not fussy about genre but I don't like OOC for the sake of humour or drama.

I don't like rape or character-bashing. I am fine with violence or sex as long as it's justified by the story. I would prefer that it not be XXX explicit.

Dear author )
antediluvian: (beware of grace and beauty)
Oh my word, oh my word, I have two gifts and I CANNOT SEE THEM YET!!!!! And we are not allowed to open meatworld presents because my mother is doing all her exercises and teeth-cleaning things FIRST!!!! I MIGHT EXPLODE!!!!!
antediluvian: (the sunlight warm on her skin)
I am so excited about getting my Yuletide, it's literally making me bounce around the house. I am possibly more excited about getting my Yuletide than I am about any meatworld presents (POSSIBLY, I say, POSSIBLY). I love all the fandoms I requested SO MUCH and anything in ANY of them is going to make me so ludicrously happy I could dance. DANCE \o\ /o/ \o/

All my posts on this journal are Yuletide posts, oh dear. Must start using it more. But to continue the yuletide theme for now~ last year was the first year I ever did Yuletide and oh man I was so scared and I requested some near and dear fandoms and [personal profile] mikeneko wrote me possibly the. most. amazing Guilty Gear fic ever and I loved it so much. And so this year I am just terribly excited about it all. TERRIBLY EXCITED.

Outside of Yuletide- my walking boots bruised the top of my right foot whilst I was shopping. I am such a delicate little flower. x________________________x
antediluvian: (so ultra-bohemian)
I finished my Yuletide fic and uploaded it literally on the deadline! I'm now going to spend the next day or so staring at it and touching the edit button with a faintly desperate gleam in my eye. I think I like it? What I don't know, though, is whether my recipient will like it, and that is the important thing.

When I was little, I used to buy my baby brother Christmas presents that I wanted. This is why he owns several of the Final Fantasy games.

But I don't do that anymore.

I'm also going to make a list of the pinch hits I would like to fill... no idea if any of that will actually get done, but last night I dreamed of how sad it would be to have no fic on Christmas day, so now I feel dutybound to do my best to avert that situation.
antediluvian: (Default)
Man, Yuletide is so kicking my ass right now. I guess this is what happens when you have a cold for ten days right before the deadline. Still, I like my concept. <3 I am huddled up on the sofa, by the Christmas tree, watching Fresh Meat. Good times. I'm just really hoping that my recipient likes it because I have never, ever written this fandom before and I'm finding it pretty fun so far.
antediluvian: (Default)
Hi, Mystery Yuletide 2011 Writer! If you drew me, let me just say first of all that I am so excited about whatever you decide to write me. <3 I love receiving gifts, and there's no such thing as a bad one.

Dear author )

If you are interested in looking at any of my own fic, I have very old stuff up at FF.Net and any new stuff goes up at my AO3 account.
antediluvian: (Default)
So for Yuletide I wrote Unnatural mother in the Sarah Rees Brennan - Demon's Lexicon fandom. It references the Demon's Covenant pretty heavily, particularly towards the end and the title itself is taken from something that Annabel says about her ex-husband.

I love Annabel so, so much, and I was so glad when Covenant made her more than an absentee mother. I was a little nervous about offering this fandom because I haven't done much fic writing for book!fandoms before. But [personal profile] oxymora's request was absolutely wonderful and so I am really glad that I did offer it.
