[yuletide] 2012 Dear Author
Hi Mystery Yuletide Writer!
First of all, thank you thank you thank you! I saw my request go out as a pinch hit and then saw that it had been claimed, which means that you are amazing and wonderful and I automatically love you for rescuing my Christmas. Thank you. You're an angel.
I am going to love whatever you write for me. I promise. I love getting presents.
Some of the things which I particularly love: good dialogue, everyday situations, flawed relationships which still work, power dynamics, strong women who are treated as strong, sibling relationships, girls who are friends with girls. I like any combination of these things. I like stories which examine people down to their details, I like relationships where the balance shifts sometimes. I'm not fussy about genre but I don't like OOC for the sake of humour or drama.
I don't like rape or character-bashing. I am fine with violence or sex as long as it's justified by the story. I would prefer that it not be XXX explicit.
1. The Demon's Lexicon
Oh, I do love this series. I love the ladies of it and I love that Mae and Sin are friends. I am very much a fan of all the canonical pairings for the books. Some of the things which I like about Mae/Nick: their witty dialogue, Mae's refusal to let Nick overwhelm her, and the way Nick responds to her. In one of her extra little stories, SRB has Jamie muse that Nick seems to have a crush on Mae because she's "bossier than God" and I absolutely love that. I love it in the third book when Mae is walking through the market and Nick is behind her like a "dark sentinel" and busily gilding her with lights. I like the fact that they're not schmoopy and that there's an interesting power dynamic there to be played with.
I would very much like pairing-fic for them, but I understand that not everyone ships these two. If it really goes against your inclinations, I'm very happy to receive fic with Mae+Sin friendship, sibling interactions, etc. I love this world and this series so much.
2. The Wolves of Mercy Falls
I found Isabel Culpeper absolutely enchanting and I wish that I could've seen more of Isabel and Cole. I would be interested in anything post!series with these two or even during the series. I'd like to see what happens next though, definitely.
Part of what I like about Isabel and Cole is extremely shallow-- I love that they are both ludicrously hot, that they KNOW they're ludicrously hot and the text TREATS them as ludicrously hot. I like that they're both quite defensive and nowhere near as willing to open up to each other as Grace and Sam are. I find it interesting that they're both damaged, although I confess that in that respect I find Isabel much much MUCH more interesting than Cole. I like the way that they're attracted to each other. I like the fact they're both very sharp and good at using words as weapons. Even if you decide not to have Isabel-being-bitten/transformed, I would love to see wolf stuff being brought in. I'm also interested to see the paths their lives take as they get older-- like Isabel going to university, etc, if she does go to university, that sort of thing.
3. Spirited Away
This film is one of my all-time favourites. It's the thing that I watch whenever I feel small or sad, or when I want to imagine walking through a tunnel to some different, stranger world. What I love the most about it is Chihiro's practicality in the face of so much oddity, the fact that even with her name taken away from her, she's still her. I love her with Haku, although I'm not so much down with the out and out smut for them. You could write pretty much anything to do with this universe, and I would lap it up with a spoon. What I particularly like, though, is fic which focuses on the mundane and the everyday.
I would be very interested to see anything that's written after the film takes place.
4. Dune series
There are some very particular things I would love to see for this world: anything with Jessica, anything with Irulan, the Fremen, Ghanima/Leto (this is the one and only incesty pairing I like in the whole world), or anything with the Bene Gesserit. I love the world of Dune and I prefer it before they started turning it green. I love the manipulations and the politics and the huge wide sandy world they have there. I love a culture in which water is so terribly valuable. I love the Bene Gesserit mantra against fear.
